Celebration of the 70th November Revolution Anniversary
In honor of the 70th anniversary of Algeria’s historic November 1st Revolution, Ambassador Mohamed El Amine BENCHERIF hosted a commemorative event in Brussels, under the theme “Glorious November: Loyalty and Renewal”.
The event was attended by members of the Algerian community established on Belgium and Luxembourg, alongside prominent officials and diplomats from Belgium, the European Commission, NATO, and the World Customs Organization, as well as diplomats accredited in Brussels.
In his address, Ambassador BENCHERIF highlighted the symbolic significance of commemorating the Algerian Revolution, a moment that marked Algeria’s liberation from colonial rule. He called for a moment of reverence to honor the memory of Algeria’s martyrs and acknowledged the contributions of those, including Belgian supporters, who stood by Algeria’s side in the fight for freedom, inspired by the values of justice and dignity.
He emphasized that these values continue to inform Algeria’s foreign policy, particularly during its current tenure on the UN Security Council, as well as its support for liberation causes, including the Palestinian cause and Western Sahara, which recently saw a significant ruling from the European Court of Justice.
Ambassador BENCHERIF also highlighted the renewed mandate of President Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, re-elected by Algerians on September 7, who has pledged to drive economic growth.
He noted that Algeria remains a reliable energy supplier to Europe and stressed Algeria’s strong and growing bilateral relationship with Belgium, which stands as Algeria’s primary trading partner in Africa and the Arab world.
Expressing pride in the Algerian diaspora, Ambassador BENCHERIF commended the community members for their dedication to their homeland, describing their presence as a testament to the lasting bond with Algeria and a tribute to the sacrifices made by the revolution’s martyrs.
Representing Belgium’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. François Cornet d’Elzius, Director for the Middle East and North Africa, affirmed Belgium’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Algeria. He noted Belgium’s eagerness to explore new avenues for cooperation that will bolster political, economic, and social bonds between the two nations.
In her remarks, Mrs. Rosemarie Gilly, Deputy Director-General for the Middle East and North Africa at the European External Action Service, praised Algeria’s unifying values of freedom and solidarity. She underscored the importance of Algeria as a partner for the European Union, citing historical, geographical, political, economic, and social factors that anchor this relationship. Gilly emphasized the EU’s aspirations to deepen cooperation with Algeria across multiple levels, from bilateral and international to African and Euro-Mediterranean frameworks.
