Relations Algeria-Belgium
Diplomatic relations between Algeria and the Kingdom of Belgium have not ceased since their establishment to grow at a satisfactory pace, offering an example of fruitful cooperation and a mutually beneficial association both politically and economically and commercial.
Relations between the two countries are first and foremost human, which have their origins in the unconditional contribution of several Belgian citizens to the Algerian Revolution, including lawyers and prominent politicians. The presence of an Algerian community made up of tens of thousands of Algerians contributes enormously to the strengthening of these relations through its valuable participation in the economic, scientific, cultural, artistic and social life in Belgium.
Bilateral relations are framed by more than twenty agreements, memoranda and letters of understanding in the fields of justice, economy and investment, consular and mobility, social security, transport , Technical, Technological, Scientific and University, Cultural and Energy Cooperation as well as other areas of common interest at the federal level and federated entities, concluded from the 1970s.
High-level visits have contributed to strengthening these relations, particularly since the visit in 1999 of Mr. Louis MICHEL, Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs, to Algiers. This visit was followed by the official visit of Mr. Abdelaziz BOUTEFLIKA, President of the Republic, to Belgium in December 2002, which gave new impetus to bilateral relations at the political and commercial level, taking account of the institutional developments in the Kingdom in particular. from Belgium. The presidential visit laid the foundations for diversified and expanded cooperation, both with the Federal Government and with the federated entities.
The visit to Algiers, in October 2004, of His Royal Highness Prince Philippe at the head of an important economic mission (one hundred companies) further strengthened economic relations between the two countries.
In the same vein, the years 2012 and 2013 were marked by the seal of the consolidation of bilateral political dialogue thanks to visits to Algiers, made by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and European Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium, Mr. Didier REYNDERS, in July 2012 then in February 2013. These visits were an opportunity to explore the prospects for consolidating bilateral relations and cooperation in the fields of energy, transport, health and new technologies.
Other visits followed, in particular that carried out in December 2016 by the Belgian Prime Minister, Mr. Charles MICHEL, and in 2018 by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Didier REYNDERS, which made it possible to formalize the dialogue between the two countries, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations.
The political dialogue is reinforced by the visits of the Ministers representing the various sectors of interest for the two countries, like the last visits to Belgium in 2017, of the Ministers of Transport and of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
On the commercial level, relations between Algeria and Belgium are maintained at a good level. Algeria remains Belgium's leading North African partner and the third in the Arab world.
