Euro-Med Partnership for Research and Innovation (PRIMA)

Euro-Med Partnership for Research and Innovation (PRIMA)

The process of the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Region (PRIMA) Initiative started with the Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation held in Barcelona in 2012, with the ambition to strengthen Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in research and innovation. This partnership includes the EU Member States, the countries associated with Horizon 2020 and the Mediterranean partner countries on an equal footing (co-ownership, co-management and co-financing) with the participation of the European Commission.

The main objective of this initiative is to develop common innovative solutions for water supply and food systems in the Mediterranean region, in order to improve their resistance to the effects of climate change, their efficiency, their profitability and their sustainability, and to contribute to the resolution, upstream, of problems related to nutrition, health, well-being and migration.

Taking into account the central role of this initiative in the regional cooperation scheme and the field of research and innovation, Algeria decided to join this initiative in April 2017. EU financial contributions to this initiative are drawn from the envelope allocated to Horizon 2020.

Algeria was the first country to sign the International Agreement establishing the terms and conditions for participation in the PRIMA initiative, on October 26, 2017, during the visit to Brussels by the Minister of Education higher education and scientific research.

To complete the process of preparing for Algeria's participation in this initiative and thus benefit from European funding under the PRIMA Foundation's calls for proposals, an Administrative Arrangement (Implementation Agreement), relating to mutual assistance to the under Article 2 of the PRIMA International Agreement, was signed on December 18, 2018 in Brussels, between the two parties, Algerian and European.

Since then, it has participated in several calls for proposals launched within the framework of this initiative.
